Who’s happy with their Gold IRA custodian these days? Asking for a friend (and myself)

Alright, so I’ve been with my current Gold IRA custodian for a little over a decade now. They’ve been… fine. Nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. But with all the economic uncertainty swirling around, particularly with the Fed’s signals and the general vibe in the oil markets lately (yeah, I’ve got 30 years in that business), I’m thinking harder about every aspect of my portfolio. My Gold IRA is a significant chunk of it, probably around $600k or so, and I’m just wondering if I’m getting the best service and security for that kind of money. Been in gold investing for about 15 years now, started getting serious after the '08 crash.
My main gripe has been their fee structure – it feels a bit opaque sometimes, and I swear it creeps up without much explanation. Also, their customer service is hit or miss. Sometimes I get someone knowledgeable, other times it feels like I’m talking to a call center robot. I’m based out of Dallas, and frankly, I prefer dealing with folks who understand the value of a straight answer and don’t waste your time. I’ve known my current rep for years, but even that familiarity isn't enough to quell my unease.
So, I’m putting it out there: who are you guys using for your Gold IRA custodians and why? Are there any specific features or services that really stand out to you? I’m particularly interested in transparency around fees, ease of communication, and robust storage options. Also, any red flags to watch out for? I’ve heard some horror stories about custodians going under or being difficult with distributions, and that's the kind of headache I absolutely want to avoid.
I’m really considering making a move, but transferring that much capital is a big decision, and I want to do my homework thoroughly. Any personal experiences, good or bad, would be super helpful. Don't hold back – let me know what you've found to be the absolute best, or even what to steer clear of. Thanks in advance for sharing your insights!
