Thinking about my first Platinum IRA - advice for a market volatility hedge?
- •I'm looking at allocating maybe 10-15% of my total portfolio to start.
- •For those of you who have taken the plunge, what were your biggest lessons learned?
- •Any pitfalls I should be super aware of?
Okay, so I've been kicking around the idea of a Platinum IRA for a while now, primarily as a hedge against the kind of market swings we've been seeing. My portfolio is sitting somewhere in the 750k range right now, heavily skewed towards tech, which has been great, but also makes me a little nervous with all the current uncertainty. I'm based here in Austin and the tech scene is buzzing, but I also remember 2008 vividly, and I'm not looking to ride that rollercoaster again without some kind of ballast.
I'm primarily interested in platinum specifically because of its industrial demand, which I hear can make it a bit more stable than gold in certain scenarios, while still offering that precious metal protection. I'm looking at allocating maybe 10-15% of my total portfolio to start. For those of you who have taken the plunge, what were your biggest lessons learned? Any pitfalls I should be super aware of? I'm leaning heavily towards physical platinum held in a secure depository, but open to hearing arguments for other approaches for IRAs.
Also, a slightly different but related question: I'm still a ways off from retirement (mid-40s), but I'm already thinking about future RMDs. I found this RMD Calculator online and it got me wondering if anyone's used it for their precious metal IRAs? Does it accurately reflect how RMDs are calculated for these types of assets, or are there special considerations I should be aware of down the line? Any thoughts on managing those distributions when they eventually come around would be super helpful. Trying to plan ahead rather than react later!
