Been meaning to post about my experience with a Gold IRA for a while now. Hit the 5-year mark back in February, and thought it's a good time to reflect. For context, I retired from the Navy as an Admiral about ten years ago and have always prioritized a diversified, disciplined approach to my portfolio. Roughly 10% of my ~3.5M portfolio is in precious metals, split between physical at home (mostly silver, to be honest) and within this Gold IRA, which holds around $250k. I initially rolled over a portion of an old 401k into it. It felt like a prudent move given the geopolitical uncertainties I've seen play out over decades.
The performance itself has been, well, steady. Not going to lie, it hasn't shot the lights out like some of my tech stocks did briefly, but that wasn't the expectation. It's been a reliable ballast. I keep an eye on it, certainly, but I'm not checking daily. My main goal was always wealth preservation and hedging against inflation, which, let's be honest, has been a significant concern lately. I’m thinking about adding more to it this year, perhaps another $50k, depending on how things shake out with interest rates and the upcoming election. Always felt better having some tangible assets outside of just paper.
One thing I’ve found incredibly useful for staying informed, without getting bogged down in daily volatility, is the Learning Center. It’s got some excellent articles and primers that really helped solidify my understanding of the various factors influencing precious metals. Much more digestible than sifting through endless financial news. Anyway, curious to hear from others who are 5+ years into their Gold IRA journey. What have your experiences been like? Any surprises, good or bad? And for those considering it, what are your biggest reservations?
