Thinking about intergenerational wealth with gold
- •Most of that is in traditional assets, but a solid 15% is in physical gold and silver, held directly in a vault, not just paper bets.
- •My kids are doing well, and frankly, they’re set up nicely.
- •It’s the grandkids – from 5 to 16 right now – that I’m really focusing on.
Lately, my wife and I have been spending quite a bit of time thinking about what we’re leaving for our grandkids, specifically how to best pass on some of our financial stability. I retired from the Navy as an Admiral years ago, and frankly, after decades of disciplined service and then a robust 20-year career in defense contracting, I'm sitting on a portfolio just north of $3 million. Most of that is in traditional assets, but a solid 15% is in physical gold and silver, held directly in a vault, not just paper bets.
My kids are doing well, and frankly, they’re set up nicely. It’s the grandkids – from 5 to 16 right now – that I’m really focusing on. The idea of gifting them a small, tangible portion of our gold seems... right. Not a huge amount, obviously, but enough to introduce them to the concept of real assets, outside of the digital noise. We’re talking about potentially setting up a trust or some staggered gift over time, maybe when they turn 18 or even 25. The thought is to give them something that’s historically held value, something they can physically hold, rather than just another stock certificate.
Does anyone here have experience with gifting gold or silver to younger family members for long-term legacy planning? I’m particularly interested in the tax implications – I'm based here in Virginia Beach, and I know state laws can throw a wrench into things. Also, any thoughts on directly gifting versus using a trust? I’ve been looking into some of the more specialized wealth management firms that deal with precious metals, but I’m always keen to hear from folks who have actually walked this path. The goal here isn't to make them wealthy overnight, but to instill a sense of real value and financial foresight, something beyond the fleeting nature of modern currency.
