Okay, so I'm looking at my self-directed IRA, specifically the precious metals allocation, and I’m having a bit of a debate with myself. Mostly gold in there, which feels right given the general instability we’ve been seeing. I'm sitting on around ~$1.8M in PMs, with about 85% in various gold coins and bars, and then the rest is scattered across some silver and a very small amount of platinum, no palladium yet.
My fund has been doing incredibly well this quarter, which is always nice, but it also makes me re-evaluate my personal safe-haven strategy. I’m wondering if I should be increasing my silver exposure. Gold has done its job, holding steady, but silver sometimes feels like it has more upside, more volatility sure, but maybe more pop? Especially with the industrial demand for silver, it just feels like it has this dual nature that gold doesn't quite replicate. My gut says keep the gold heavy for stability, but my brain is looking at potential growth. I'm based in Greenwich, CT, so I'm always looking at how global economics are impacting these markets, and right now, things are... interesting to say the least.
I’m thinking of shifting another $100k-$150k into silver over the next few months as a test. Not a huge chunk from my overall ~$4.5M liquid portfolio, but enough to feel the difference. Has anyone here significantly ramped up their silver holdings recently? What’s your psychological threshold for silver vs. gold? Do you think the industrial demand theme is strong enough to really push silver past its traditional role as gold’s little brother, or is it just wishful thinking?
