Been seeing a lot of chatter lately on Roth vs. Traditional Gold IRAs, and it got me thinking about my own choices over the years. I've been in gold for a solid 15 years now, started really digging into it after the '08 crash, thought it was a smart move to diversify away from all the paper assets I had. I’m an old oil guy, been through a few boom and bust cycles, and believe me, you learn to appreciate something you can hold in your hand.
Most of my holdings are in a Traditional Gold IRA, probably around $700k of my portfolio is tied up there. The tax deductions were a big draw for me back when I was still pulling in big crude checks. Now that I’m looking at retirement in the next few years here in Dallas, I'm really starting to feel the weight of those future taxes on withdrawals. Part of me wishes I’d diversified more into a Roth Gold IRA back when my income was lower, but hindsight is always 20/20, right? Anyone else feel that pang of regret on their Traditional contributions as they get closer to retirement?
I've actually been using the Retirement Planner tool over at Gold IRA Blueprint to model out different withdrawal scenarios, and it's been pretty eye-opening honestly. It really brings home the tax implications of a Traditional IRA in retirement. For any of you younger folks just starting out, or even those in their 40s still building wealth, seriously consider a Roth Gold IRA. Even a smaller amount compounding tax-free over decades could be huge. The idea of tax-free growth and withdrawals on physical gold is incredibly appealing.
What's your take on it? Did you go Traditional or Roth for your gold, and looking back, would you do it differently? Especially interested to hear from anyone who's already retired and is actively withdrawing from either. How has it impacted your retirement income?
