Been thinking a lot about the Roth vs. Traditional Gold IRA debate lately for my retirement savings. Got about half a million bucks in various accounts, and I’m looking to move a chunk of that, maybe a hundred grand, into a Gold IRA. I’ve been in the dairy business my whole life here in Wisconsin, seen enough ups and downs to know you can't trust everything to paper assets. Gold just feels like a solid, tangible hedge, especially with how things are looking globally.
My main hangup is the tax implications. With a Traditional, I get the immediate tax deduction, which is appealing right now. But then I'm paying taxes on withdrawals in retirement, and who knows what tax rates will be then? Could be way higher, could be lower. With a Roth, I pay taxes upfront on the contributions, meaning my gold grows tax-free and withdrawals are tax-free in retirement. That sounds pretty sweet for long-term planning, especially if I can stash this gold away and forget about it for twenty years.
I'm 58 now and planning to fully retire around 65-67. My income is decent, probably in that middle-to-upper bracket for Wisconsin, but not hitting those top-tier tax brackets where a Traditional IRA might be an absolute no-brainer for everyone. I'm leaning Roth just for the peace of mind knowing those future distributions won't hit me with a tax bill, but that upfront tax hit is making me pause. I’ve always been a pretty practical guy – weigh the pros and cons, sleep on it. But this one feels like a bigger decision.
For those of you who’ve gone the Gold IRA route, especially with a portfolio in this range, what did you decide on for Roth vs. Traditional? What factors really sealed the deal for you? Any regrets either way? Appreciate any insights from folks who've been there and made the call.
