Rollover Timeline - Just closed on a beachfront in St. Barth's, want to get this gold IRA funded
- •Finally got around to rolling over a good chunk of my old 401(k) into a Gold IRA.
- •The process itself wasn't too bad, surprisingly.
- •I'm sitting on about $2.5M in my overall portfolio, with a decent chunk of that in some legacy 401ks that just weren't performing how I liked.
Finally got around to rolling over a good chunk of my old 401(k) into a Gold IRA. The process itself wasn't too bad, surprisingly. I'm sitting on about $2.5M in my overall portfolio, with a decent chunk of that in some legacy 401ks that just weren't performing how I liked. Decided to diversify a bit, especially with all the market volatility lately. My main concern was the timeline – I've heard horror stories of these rollovers dragging on forever, and frankly, my time is money.
I initiated the direct rollover about three weeks ago with around $750k from a pre-tax 401(k) I had from an old gig back in 2010. The custodian was surprisingly efficient. They had the paperwork out to me within a day, and once I signed everything, the funds were released about five business days later. My Gold IRA custodian confirmed receipt a couple of days after that. So, from my end, about 10-12 business days from initial contact to the funds being settled in the new account. Pretty swift, all things considered. I was braced for at least a month, given how slow some of these financial institutions can be.
Now, the next step is actually choosing the metals and getting them allocated. My advisor is pushing for a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, which seems reasonable. Anyone have strong opinions on specific types of gold for a Gold IRA? Also, has anyone used that Eligibility Checker tool? I ran my numbers through it before I even started the process, just to make sure I wasn't wasting my time. Seemed pretty straightforward. Would be curious to hear if others found it useful, or if there were any surprises after using it.
Overall, happy with the move. It's good to have a tangible hedge against inflation, especially with all the talk of central bank policies out of Washington and Brussels. My family's legacy is important to me, and having some physical assets just feels right. What have your experiences been like with rollover timelines? Am I an outlier with how quickly mine went through, or is this the new normal?
