Just went through the whole 401k to Gold IRA rollover rigamarole and figured I'd share my experience for anyone else on the fence. I've been running my tour company here in Savannah for years, and let me tell you, you see a lot of economic ups and downs. That's why I've always been a bit antsy about having all my retirement eggs in the stock market basket, especially with all the volatility lately.
I had about $180k sitting in an old 401k from a previous gig, just gathering dust and giving me headaches every time I checked the news. After a lot of research, I decided a Gold IRA was the way to go. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I picked a company β did my homework on that, looked at reviews, fees, storage options, all that jazz. Once I decided, they basically walked me through the paperwork. It was a direct rollover, so no taxes or penalties thankfully. The funds transferred pretty quickly, maybe a couple of weeks from start to finish for the money to be in the new account and the gold purchased.
The actual buying of the metals was probably the most interesting part. Knowing I've got physical gold backing a chunk of my retirement, instead of just numbers on a screen, honestly feels pretty good. Itβs a peace of mind thing, especially with inflation hovering like a gnat around a sweet tea. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples. Didn't mess with palladium this time around, though I've seen some chatter about it. Anyone here have palladium in their IRA? What's your take?
Overall, I'm happy with the move. Itβs certainly a different kind of investment than what I'm used to, but for long-term wealth preservation, I really think itβs the smart play, especially for folks like me who have seen enough cycles to know things can turn on a dime. Has anyone else done this recently? Any headaches or smooth sailing?
