Finally got around to rolling over the last of my 401k from my Wall Street days into a Gold IRA. Been planning this for a while now, especially with all the market volatility lately. My initial allocation for metals was already pretty heavy, but this just cemented it further. We’re talking a significant chunk, about $1.5 million from that old 401k, now sitting safely in physical gold and silver. I’m in NYC, and the whole process was surprisingly smooth. Just hoping I made the right call for the long term, though with my history, I tend to trust my gut on these big plays.
The main driver for me was the sheer uncertainty out there. I saw enough cycles come and go during my career to know when things feel... off. Inflation still gnawing away, geopolitical jitters, and a stock market that feels a bit too frothy sometimes. It just felt like the prudent move to diversify out of the purely paper assets. Plus, being able to physically hold the assets (or at least know they’re securely vaulted) gives a different kind of peace of mind.
I know some folks will say I'm being too conservative, but honestly, after decades in the game, capital preservation is paramount. My kids are grown, the house is paid off, and I'm not looking to chase quick returns anymore. I’ve been looking at the Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool quite a bit recently, especially the 10-year view. It really helps put things in perspective and shows how gold has held its own, sometimes even outperformed, when you look at longer periods. For me, it’s about weathering the storms, not necessarily hitting a grand slam.
Anyone else here recently made a similar move with their retirement accounts? What were your motivations? And for those who have had a Gold IRA for a while, anything you've learned or wish you knew starting out? Always interested to hear other perspectives on this.
