Alright, so I've been wrestling with this decision and figured I'd throw it out to this group. I'm looking to diversify a chunk of my retirement savings, around $100k of my roughly $750k portfolio, into a Platinum IRA. I've been in the dairy business my whole life here in Madison, so I'm used to good, solid, tangible assets, and frankly, the stock market feels a little too much like betting on milk futures these days. That's why I'm leaning heavily into platinum here, feels like a good hedge.
My big hang-up is whether to go Roth or Traditional. I'm 55 now, hoping to fully retire around 62-65. My income has been pretty steady, pretty decent for a while, enough to put me in that middle-to-upper-middle tax bracket. The idea of tax-free withdrawals in retirement with a Roth is mighty appealing, especially if inflation keeps chugging along. But then again, a tax deduction now on $100k isn't anything to sneeze at either. My gut tells me taxes are only going to go up in the future, but that's just a gut feeling, not exactly financial gospel.
Anyone else in a similar boat, maybe a few years back, trying to make this call with a good chunk of change in platinum? What did you end up doing and why? Did you regret it either way? I'm trying to think beyond just today's tax bill and really plan for when I'm actually relying on this for income. Any wisdom from you folks would be greatly appreciated.
