Thinking about rolling over another chunk of my traditional IRA into a Palladium IRA, probably around $100k this time. I've got a decent position in gold and silver already through my existing self-directed IRA, but with everything going on geopolitically, palladium feels like a smart move for diversification. I'm sitting on about $750k total in my retirement accounts, and it just feels like the dollar is on shakier ground than most people realize, especially from our vantage point out here in the Pacific.
My last rollover was pretty seamless, mostly just shuffling paper between custodians, but that was just under the annual contribution limit a few years back. This time it's a bigger bite. I'm trying to make sure I don't trigger any nasty tax surprises. I’m especially looking for insights into the "one-rollover-per-year" rule. Does that apply per account or across all my IRAs? I've got a couple of traditional IRAs with different brokers, and I'm wondering if I can do one rollover from each in the same 12-month period without a penalty.
Also, any veterans or folks who've dealt with larger rollovers like this – did you find it beneficial to consult with a specialized tax advisor, or is the process straightforward enough if you adhere strictly to the rules? I'm retired military, so I'm used to following procedures, but taxes always make me sweat a bit. My financial advisor is good, but sometimes I feel like they're a little too focused on mainstream equities.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who's done a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer versus an indirect rollover. The direct transfer seems safer from a tax perspective, but I'm open to arguments if there's a reason to consider the indirect route. Just trying to ensure I protect these assets I've worked hard for. Cheers from Honolulu!
