Palladium IRA storage fees - what's normal?

    Key Takeaways
    • Okay, so I've been in a Gold IRA for a few years now, got turned onto it by some of the execs at the oil company I work for here in Tulsa.
    • They were all talking about diversifying outside of the stock market, especially since everything felt so volatile.
    • I started with about $100k rolling over an old 401k, and it's been a pretty good ride so far.

Okay, so I've been in a Gold IRA for a few years now, got turned onto it by some of the execs at the oil company I work for here in Tulsa. They were all talking about diversifying outside of the stock market, especially since everything felt so volatile. I started with about $100k rolling over an old 401k, and it's been a pretty good ride so far.

Lately though, I've been looking more into palladium. My current custodian, which I won't name publically but they're a pretty standard player, charges me an annual storage fee based on a percentage of the total value of my metals. For gold, it felt reasonable, but I'm thinking about moving a chunk of my portfolio, maybe twenty or thirty thousand, into palladium. I know palladium is more expensive per ounce right now, and the percentages seem to add up quickly enough with gold that I'm wondering if this percentage-based fee structure is the best for palladium.

I guess my main question is: what are typical storage fees for Palladium IRAs? For those of you with palladium, do you see a flat fee model more often, or is it always a percentage? I'm just trying to figure out if my current custodian's fees will be significantly higher if I start adding a lot of palladium, or if I should look into moving that specific portion elsewhere. Any experiences or recommendations would be super helpful. Feeling a little out of my depth specifically on the palladium storage side.

This was incredibly helpful, thanks for breaking down the Palladium storage fees. I've been exclusively in gold for my IRA, since 2018 I think, and the numbers you're showing are really making me consider diversifying a bit. I started with around 150k in my Gold IRA and it's grown nicely since, so I'm always looking for solid info to make informed decisions. For anyone else who's new to this, The Learning Center at Gold IRA Blueprint has some fantastic guides on storage and fees – I basically lived on that site when I first got started.

Glad you asked this! I've been wondering the same myself. When I converted a chunk of my 401k into a Gold IRA a few years back, I thought I had a handle on the fees, but then I started looking at adding some palladium and the storage fees for that seem... different? My current custodian quoted me something that felt a bit steep, so keen to see what others are paying.

Interesting that you mentioned the execs at your company got you into it. Were they also specifically talking about palladium, or did that come later for you?

Hey, interesting post! While diversifying is always a good idea, have you considered *why* palladium specifically? It's often seen as a bit more volatile than gold or silver, and while it's had some great runs, it can also drop pretty hard. Your execs might be onto something, but for an IRA, sometimes "boring" and stable is better for the long haul, especially with those storage fees eating into returns.

    Just something to consider!

Hey, good question! Storage fees can definitely vary quite a bit, especially with palladium being a less common IRA asset. One thing to keep in mind is that some depositories charge a flat annual fee, while others might do a percentage of the asset's value. The percentage-based ones can really jump up if palladium prices spike, which is something to watch out for.

For some comparison, you might want to check out a few different IRA custodian's fee schedules. Searching for "gold IRA custodian fees" and then specifically looking for their palladium rates can give you a better feel for the range. Hope that helps!

Agreed on the volatility, it's wild out there. My Gold IRA's been a solid anchor for me too. For storage fees, I'm paying around $100 annually for my gold and silver, no palladium in my mix yet. Seems pretty standard from what I've seen others report, so that $250 for palladium sounds a bit steep, but it might be due to palladium's unique storage requirements. Definitely worth shopping around though!

Honestly, Palladium IRA storage fees are a beast compared to gold. When I set up my Gold IRA here in Columbus last year with my ~$35k portfolio, my annual storage for segregated gold was about $180 at Delaware Depository. My dad looked into palladium, and the quotes he got for a similar value were almost double. Definitely shop around and ask for a detailed breakdown of how they calculate those fees, especially if you're not going with commingled storage.

Wow, this is super timely for me. I just rolled over about $75k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals last month, mostly gold and some silver, but I was curious about palladium too. My storage fees with Delaware Depository for the gold and silver are 0.10% annually – is that generally in line with what you Palladium guys are seeing? I'm in Fresno, and want to make sure I'm not overpaying if I decide to diversify more.

Interesting discussion on palladium fees. I've got a decent chunk (around 70k) of gold in a Gold IRA, stored deep in Delaware, and honestly, reading about y'all nickel-and-diming over small storage differences just makes me scratch my head. For me, the peace of mind knowing my wealth is physically secured and diversified away from the Nashville housing market, truly untouchable by digital crises, is worth every penny of those vault fees, no matter the metal. Are we really quibbling over basis points when the whole point is protecting against economic freefall?

Woah, palladium IRAs are a thing? I just opened a Gold IRA myself with a firm out of Delaware and they quoted me 0.75% annually for segregated storage on my ~300k. That sounded pretty reasonable to me compared to what I've heard for physical gold at home. What kind of fees are we talking about for palladium – is it way higher given the rarity?

Been in this game longer than most of y'all have been paying taxes, and seeing Palladium storage fees north of 1% always makes me raise an eyebrow. Back in '08, when everyone else was panicking and I was loading up on gold, my storage for an equivalent value never touched those figures. I've always stuck with vaults that have a flat annual fee, regardless of value - saved me a fortune over the years as my holdings grew well past that initial $400k mark I started with.

Honestly, "normal" palladium IRA storage fees seem like a budget line item for people still sweating over basis points. We shifted a significant portion out of palladium and into gold years ago, specifically some of the rarer constitutional coins, not because of fees but because the upside for palladium felt capped. If you've got a seven-figure portfolio, the cost of top-tier, segregated storage for something like numismatic gold in a facility like Delaware Depository isn't even a rounding error; it's just the price of true security and peace of mind. Focus on the asset, not the nickel and dime.

@Karen Robinson - You're absolutely right about palladium storage fees, they can be shocking depending on the custodian! Even for gold, those storage fees can vary wildly. I'm in Houston and when I was setting up my Gold IRA a couple of years back (my portfolio was sitting closer to the $1.5M mark at the time), I found a tool that really helped simplify things. Take the Gold IRA Quiz at https://quiz.goldirablueprint.com/?forum - it matches you with the right strategy for your situation, including custodians known for reasonable fees.

Totally agree on watching those storage fees for palladium! I made the jump into a Gold IRA about five years ago, after seeing my 401k take a couple of gut punches. My custodian actually offered both gold and palladium, and while I dabbled a bit, the storage costs for palladium were always a concern for me compared to gold. That's why the Best Gold IRA Companies comparison tool at goldirablueprint.com/best-gold-ira-companies/ was so invaluable when I was setting things up – it laid out all the fee structures clearly, which helped me allocate my roughly $600k portfolio predominantly into gold. Seriously, do your homework on all the fees upfront!

This is a good question and something I ran into a few years back with my own Gold IRA. I’m out here in Philly, and when I was setting up my account with about $200k initially, I noticed the palladium storage fees were a bit higher than the gold. After some back and forth with Augusta Precious Metals (who I ultimately went with), we negotiated a tiered rate that brought the palladium storage more in line with the gold as my overall holdings grew past the $500k mark. It definitely pays to shop around and be prepared to haggle a bit, especially on larger accounts.
