My wife talked me into a Gold IRA in 2020 – best decision ever! (originally looked at Palladium too)

Okay, so I don't usually post much, mostly lurk, but I wanted to share my experience because I see a lot of questions about Gold IRAs. Back in early 2020, before everything went wild, I was actually looking at Palladium. A buddy of mine, who's big into industrial metals, was hyping it up, and honestly, the charts looked pretty good. I was seriously considering putting about $25k of my retirement savings into a Palladium IRA. My wife, though, came at me with a stack of articles and some serious research.
She's not usually the one pushing for investments, but she had this really compelling case for gold. She brought up historical stability, its role as a hedge against inflation, and how it performs during economic uncertainty. She kept saying, "Think about what's coming, we need something reliable." Honestly, at the time, I was a bit skeptical. I'm a principal here in Little Rock, and while I teach financial literacy, sometimes I get too caught up in specific trends rather than the foundational stuff. But she was persistent, and eventually, her arguments won me over. We ended up putting about $50k into a Gold IRA in March 2020, right when things started getting really dicey.
Looking back, I owe her dinner for life. That $50k has done incredibly well for us, providing a solid anchor in our portfolio, especially with all the market fluctuations since then. The peace of mind alone has been worth it. It’s comforting to know a significant chunk of our retirement isn't tied directly to the stock market's daily whims. I’m still holding onto it and even adding a little each year when I can.
Anyone else have a spouse, or partner, who really pushed you towards a specific investment that paid off big time? Or conversely, one that they talked you out of that you're now grateful for? I'm always curious to hear other people's stories.
