Been seeing a lot of chatter lately, both on here and even from some execs at work, about the whole physical gold vs. paper gold debate for IRAs. As someone who’s had a chunk of their retirement in precious metals for a few years now, I wanted to share my two cents, especially for those who might be considering it but aren’t sure which way to go. Full disclosure: I'm a secretary for an oil company here in Tulsa, and honestly, a lot of what I've learned about investing, particularly in commodities, came from just paying attention to the higher-ups.
When I first started looking into a Gold IRA, probably around 2020 or so, I had about $100k socked away in a regular Roth and wanted to diversify away from just stocks. The idea of having something tangible really appealed to me. After a lot of research (and eavesdropping on some fascinating executive lunches), I decided to go with physical gold held in a depository for my IRA. My main reasoning was security. The thought of owning a certificate or an ETF that represents gold, but doesn't actually guarantee me ownership of a specific bar if things went really sideways, just felt... less secure. Especially with the way the economy has been fluctuating, I sleep better knowing that my gold isn't just a number on a screen, but actual coinage or bars somewhere.
Now, I know some people prefer paper gold like ETFs (GLD, IAU) because of the liquidity and lower storage/insurance fees. And for some active traders or those with smaller sums, I totally get it. But for a significant chunk of my retirement savings – which is now closer to $200k in the Gold IRA part of my portfolio – I just couldn't bring myself to trust a paper asset in the same way. The peace of mind of having segregated, allocated physical gold just feels right, even with the slightly higher fees. I mean, my goal is wealth preservation, not necessarily day trading gold futures.
So, for those of you who have either physical gold or paper gold in your IRAs (or even just in general), what was your thought process? Did you consider the counter-arguments? Are there any downsides to physical gold within an IRA that I might be overlooking, besides the obvious liquidity difference? Really curious to hear diverse perspectives on this one, especially as I’m always learning.
