    💠 Palladium IRA

My rollover from 401k to Gold (and a little Palladium!) IRA

    Key Takeaways
    • $150,000 in there
    • 70% of that into a Gold IRA
    • 5% into Palladium
    The 3-step rollover process explained

Hey everyone, Gary here from sunny Fresno. Seen a lot of chatter lately about folks moving their retirement funds, and I wanted to share my own experience. As an agriculture guy, I’ve always believed in things you can touch, things that have intrinsic value, unlike some of these tech stocks… anyway!

A few years back, my 401k was feeling a little… stagnant. Around 2019, I had roughly $150,000 in there, mostly in highly diversified (read: confusing) mutual funds. I kept hearing about inflation and just didn't like the look of things. My gut, which has served me well in the almond business for decades, told me to get into something more tangible. After a lot of research and talking to a few companies, I decided to roll over about 70% of that into a Gold IRA, and for good measure, I put a small slice, maybe 5% into Palladium. Always good to diversify, right?

The actual rollover process was surprisingly smooth. I worked with a company that really held my hand through it. The biggest thing was just getting the paperwork right and understanding the timing – you don't want any penalties! My old 401k administrator was a bit slow, but once they cut the check, the new custodian handled everything efficiently. Honestly, it was less stressful than getting a new tractor loan, which says something! Now, looking at the performance… well, let's just say I'm feeling pretty good about that decision given everything that's happened since. I certainly feel a lot more secure knowing a significant portion of my retirement is in physical assets.

So, I'm curious – has anyone else here made a similar move recently? What were your reasons? And for those of you who've held precious metals in your IRA for a while, any long-term insights or tips you'd share? I'm always looking to learn from fellow investors!

@Ruth Perez, I could have written this post myself! That's almost exactly what I did last year, rolling over just shy of 80k from an old company 401k into a Gold IRA. Living here in Nashville, I've seen the cost of living just explode, and it really solidified my decision to diversify beyond just paper assets. I'm so glad I got a piece of mind knowing my retirement isn't entirely at the mercy of the stock market roller coaster.

Interesting move, OP. I did a similar rollover for about a third of my portfolio back in '21 – mostly gold, but a few platinum coins too for diversity. And while the peace of mind of holding physical metals is great, I've got to say, these past few years have made me wonder if *some* of that capital wouldn't have been better off just sitting in a high-yield savings account or even some boring old dividend stocks. The "disaster hedge" is real, but so is opportunity cost, and it feels like a lot of gold bugs overlook that second part in their enthusiasm.

Glad to see I'm not the only one in the Columbus area looking at precious metals IRAs! I was a little nervous about taking the leap with my modest 401k balance ($30k at the time), but after reading this article from Money Metals Exchange about *safe storage options for IRA-held metals*, it really put my mind at ease. Knowing my gold and silver wouldn't just be sitting in some random vault was a huge factor.

This is super interesting to me, especially since I'm just getting my feet wet with a Gold IRA myself after rolling over about 70k from an old 401k a few months back. I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced significant fees on the storage side, or if there are certain custodians that are generally better about that? The thought of diversifying away from just paper assets makes me feel a lot more secure, especially with how things have been lately.

This is incredibly helpful, especially seeing the step-by-step with the custodian and dealer. I just completed a similar rollover last month from an old 401k – decided to put about $350k into physical gold and another $50k into silver. Feeling a lot more secure now, particularly with the market volatility lately. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Great post, and good for you diversifying! I did a similar 401k rollover about five years back, not quite as much as you, but enough to get peace of mind with my **gold IRA**. The tax advantages were a huge plus, obviously, but honestly, just having a tangible asset like **precious metals** in my **retirement savings** makes me sleep better at night here in Providence, especially after seeing the market swings lately.

Glad to see another Philly resident diversifying their retirement with precious metals. I remember back in '08, watching my paper assets bleed out while my small stack of Eagles barely flinched – that's when I truly understood the power of physical. You're making a smart move, especially with the palladium; it's got real industrial demand backing it up.

@Janet Cook That's awesome to hear, gives me some confidence I'm on the right track! I'm actually in Dublin, OH and just starting to dip my toes into the gold IRA world myself, mostly looking at a ~1.5M rollover from an old 401k. I've been poring over resources like the Learning Center which has great guides if you're just starting out, but one thing still has me scratching my head: how did you actually pick your custodian? There are so many out there, and I'm finding it hard to differentiate them beyond their fee structures.

Honestly, that's a bold move with the palladium, especially right now. I diversified into a Gold IRA back in '19, right before all the COVID madness, and it's been the bedrock of my portfolio through everything, including this Austin real estate frenzy. While I certainly see the appeal of adding other precious metals, for my rollover from an old tech 401k, I stuck strictly to physical gold bullion – keeping it simple felt like the safest play with a good chunk of change ($450k-ish at the time) that I couldn't afford to see evaporate. I'm curious what your rationale was for palladium over, say, silver or even platinum?

@Ruth Perez – I just wanted to echo your sentiment and say thank you to everyone who's been sharing their insights here! I initiated my own rollover from an old 401(k) to a Gold IRA just last year – about $150k for me, living here in Minneapolis – and it's been incredibly helpful to read about others' experiences, especially with storage concerns and specific custodian choices. This kind of real-world feedback is truly invaluable for us relatively newer entrants.
