My rollover from 401k to Gold (and a little Palladium!) IRA
- •$150,000 in there
- •70% of that into a Gold IRA
- •5% into Palladium
Hey everyone, Gary here from sunny Fresno. Seen a lot of chatter lately about folks moving their retirement funds, and I wanted to share my own experience. As an agriculture guy, I’ve always believed in things you can touch, things that have intrinsic value, unlike some of these tech stocks… anyway!
A few years back, my 401k was feeling a little… stagnant. Around 2019, I had roughly $150,000 in there, mostly in highly diversified (read: confusing) mutual funds. I kept hearing about inflation and just didn't like the look of things. My gut, which has served me well in the almond business for decades, told me to get into something more tangible. After a lot of research and talking to a few companies, I decided to roll over about 70% of that into a Gold IRA, and for good measure, I put a small slice, maybe 5% into Palladium. Always good to diversify, right?
The actual rollover process was surprisingly smooth. I worked with a company that really held my hand through it. The biggest thing was just getting the paperwork right and understanding the timing – you don't want any penalties! My old 401k administrator was a bit slow, but once they cut the check, the new custodian handled everything efficiently. Honestly, it was less stressful than getting a new tractor loan, which says something! Now, looking at the performance… well, let's just say I'm feeling pretty good about that decision given everything that's happened since. I certainly feel a lot more secure knowing a significant portion of my retirement is in physical assets.
So, I'm curious – has anyone else here made a similar move recently? What were your reasons? And for those of you who've held precious metals in your IRA for a while, any long-term insights or tips you'd share? I'm always looking to learn from fellow investors!
