My Gold IRA Rollover Journey (and a question about premiums)

Thought I'd share my experience rolling over a chunk of my old 401(k) into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about this for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and the general economic instability lately. I've got most of my wealth tied up in the market, but as a manufacturing exec here in Cleveland, I just get hard assets. Always have. So, the idea of having some physical gold backing in my retirement portfolio really appealed to me.
I had about $300k sitting in an old 401(k) from a previous employer – wasn't touching it, wasn't really growing much beyond the market average. After a lot of research, I decided to pull about $150k of that out and convert it into a Gold IRA. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I worked with a firm that specialized in precious metals, and they walked me through all the paperwork. The transfer from the old custodian to the new one took a few weeks, which felt a little slow at the time, but honestly, it was smoother than I expected. No tax implications since it was a direct rollover from one retirement account to another. Huge relief there.
The gold itself is held in a depository in Delaware, which gives me peace of mind knowing it's secure and insured. I opted for mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples. What struck me, though, were the premiums. I knew there'd be some, but it felt a little higher than I anticipated when I saw the final numbers. It wasn't outrageous, but it definitely cut into the 'spot price' buy a bit more than I was mentally prepared for. I guess that's just the cost of doing business and having the physical asset.
So, for those of you who've done similar rollovers, what were your thoughts on the premiums you paid? Did you feel they were reasonable, or did they give you pause? I'm happy with the move – sleep a little better knowing I have that hedge – but always curious about others' experiences with the numbers side of things.
