My Gold IRA - 5 Years In, What I've Learned (and Gained!)

Thought I’d share my experience with a Gold IRA for anyone on the fence or just curious. I’m an old-timer from the Vegas casino scene – seen enough highs and lows at the tables to know that while the house usually wins, you can still play smart. That mindset is what got me looking into something outside of stocks for a portion of my retirement. About five years ago, I decided to diversify a chunk of my portfolio, roughly $150k at the time, into a Gold IRA.
My thinking was pretty straightforward: I'd seen various market crashes over the decades, and while I’m not saying the end of the world is nigh, having a tangible asset that historically holds its value when everything else goes sideways felt like a no-brainer for a piece of my retirement. I wasn't looking for a get-rich-quick scheme. I was looking for stability and a hedge against inflation. With all the money printing going on, I couldn't shake the feeling that my dollar was slowly losing its punch, even here in Vegas where prices for everything seem to climb every week.
Fast forward to today, roughly five years after that initial move. My original $150k is now sitting comfortably closer to $210k. That's a decent return, especially considering the volatility some of my other investments have seen. It's not a Lambo-in-the-driveway kind of return, but for what it is – a relatively safe, long-term play – I'm genuinely pleased. The peace of mind alone has been worth it. Knowing that a good chunk of my retirement isn't tied directly to the stock market's daily whims helps me sleep better at night, especially with all the global uncertainty.
I know some folks will say you can get better returns elsewhere, and sure, for some of my portfolio, I’m chasing those higher gains. But for this specific portion, the goal was capital preservation and inflation protection, and it's delivered. Anyone else been in a Gold IRA for a similar timeframe? What are your thoughts on its role in a balanced portfolio, especially for us folks approaching retirement?
