My 5-year Gold IRA run – feeling pretty decent about it

Hard to believe it’s already been five years since I first pulled the trigger on a Gold IRA. Seriously, feels like just yesterday I was sitting in my living room here in Vegas, after another long night dealing with table shufflers, wondering if I was making the right call. I had about $150k in a traditional IRA at the time and, let’s be real, the market volatility was making me a little antsy. Worked in casinos my whole life, so I understand risk, but seeing my retirement fund roller-coastering like a drunk tourist on a blackjack table was not my idea of a good time.
I ended up rolling over about $75,000 of that into physical gold coins. Did my due diligence, talked to a few different companies, and eventually settled on one that seemed transparent and had good reviews from others in my situation. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, a lot less complicated than I thought it would be. Fast forward to now, and that initial $75k is sitting pretty close to $110,000. Not hitting any lottery jackpots, but for a portion of my retirement that I consider a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty, I'm genuinely pleased with that return.
I know some people on these forums are skeptical about physical gold, pointing to the storage fees and the tracking of spot price. And yeah, those are valid points. But for me, the peace of mind knowing I have a tangible asset outside of the financial system’s main currents is worth it. Especially after seeing some of the crazy stuff that's happened globally over the last few years. It’s not about getting rich quick; it’s about preserving wealth and having a safety net. Plus, living in a town built on calculated risks, having a solid, less volatile anchor feels... well, responsible.
Anyone else here been in a Gold IRA for a similar timeframe? What were your experiences like? Did you go with coins, bars, or a mix? Always interested to hear other folks’ journeys and if they’re seeing similar results. Curious if anyone has taken a distribution yet and how that process went.
