Just hitting my 5-year mark with a Gold IRA and figured I'd throw my experience out there. Started this thing back in late 2018, right when things were looking a little... interesting. Got about $150k rolled over from an old 401k into a self-directed IRA, with roughly 70% in physical gold and 30% in silver. Living here in Vegas, you get a good feel for risk and volatility, and that gut feeling told me to diversify beyond just paper assets. I've seen too many people on the Strip hit it big and then lose it all because they didn't spread their bets. I don't want to be one of them.
My main goal wasn't massive growth, but more about wealth preservation and hedging against inflation. Looking back, I'd say it's paid off exactly as I hoped, maybe even a bit better. My initial $150k has grown to around $205k as of today, which is a solid 36% return over five years. That's not blowing anyone's mind compared to some tech stocks, but it feels like a very secure kind of growth. The peace of mind alone is worth a lot, especially with all the economic weirdness going on globally.
The process itself was fairly straightforward. Went with a well-known custodian (don't want to shill, but they're one of the big ones you see advertised) and had absolutely no issues with the rollover or storage. Everything was transparent, and I get regular statements. The only real "downside" is that it's not as liquid as, say, my regular brokerage account. But again, wasn't looking for quick trades here, more for long-term stability.
Anyone else hit a similar milestone recently? How's your precious metals portfolio performing? Curious if my returns are in line with what others are seeing, particularly those who got in around the same timeframe. Also, for those with even longer timelines, what's your take on holding physical vs. gold mining stocks for the long haul?
