My 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - Smooth Sailing for the most part

Thought I'd share my experience with rolling over a chunk of my 401k into a Gold IRA. Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about inflation and the general state of things, and honestly, the thought of having 100% of my retirement tied up in traditional paper assets just didn't sit right anymore. Especially living down here in Palm Beach, you see a lot of folks who've been around the block a time or two, and the consensus on tangible assets has only gotten stronger over the years.
I started this process about six months back, after officially stepping down from the CEO role. Had a pretty significant chunk in the old 401k – north of $2 million, but less than $5 million. Decided to move about 30% of it into physical gold and silver. For anyone considering it, the direct rollover was surprisingly straightforward. My old plan administrator was a bit slow on the uptake, but once they got moving, it was essentially a direct transfer of funds from them to the Gold IRA custodian. Didn't have to touch the money myself, which was a big relief for tax purposes. The hardest part was just finding the right custodian who wasn't going to fleece me on fees or push me into some overpriced numismatic junk.
My reasoning for such a substantial allocation to metals is pretty simple: diversification and principle preservation. This isn't about getting rich quick; it's about protecting what I’ve spent a lifetime building. I’ve seen enough market cycles to know that what goes up can come down, and frankly, I prefer the stability of something that's held value for millennia. Plus, with the way the Fed's been printing lately, it just feels like sensible insurance. Anyone else feel this way about their portfolio, particularly as they get closer to or in retirement?
On a related note, for those of you who are already taking distributions or getting close, have you used any RMD calculators? I was playing around with one from RMD Calculator to get a rough idea of what my Required Minimum Distributions from the Gold IRA might look like down the road. It seems pretty handy for planning. Would be interested to hear if others have found it useful or if there are other tools out there worth checking out for RMD planning with unconventional assets. Always open to learning what others are doing to manage their retirement effectively.
