Been seeing a lot of chatter lately on rollovers, and figured I'd share my own experience going from a 401k into a Gold IRA. As a tourism business owner here in Savannah, I’ve ridden my share of economic waves. We've had seasons where the tourists are practically tripping over each other, and then times like early pandemic where you could shoot a cannon down River Street and not hit a soul. That kind of unpredictability really hammered home the need for some stability in my retirement planning.
About five years ago, I started seriously looking into precious metals. My 401k was doing... alright. Nothing to write home about, but definitely not keeping pace with the inflation I was seeing firsthand with suppliers and even staffing costs. After a lot of research, and a few conversations with some folks who'd been in the game longer than me, I decided to roll over about $150,000 from my old 401k into a Gold IRA. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I picked a reputable custodian, they handled most of the paperwork, and it was a direct rollover so no tax penalties. It definitely felt good to see those physical assets secured, especially when the market gets squirrely.
My biggest concern back then was how to properly diversify and make sure I wasn't putting all my eggs in one basket – even if that basket was gold. I split it between various physical gold products and a smaller portion in silver, just to add a little more spread. Knowing that a good chunk of my retirement is now in something tangible, not just цифры on a screen, provides a lot of peace of mind. Especially with all the talk about potential future recessions or currency instability, it feels like a real hedge.
Now, I’m starting to think about when I’ll eventually have to take distributions. I stumbled across this RMD Calculator which looks super helpful for figuring out those required minimum distributions. Anyone else used it? What are your thoughts on precious metals as you get closer to retirement age? Are you considering diversifying even further, or sticking with your current allocations?
