Diving into the Gold IRA space, I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately about minimum investment requirements. For anyone who’s been around this block a few times, it’s not really a secret that most reputable custodians have certain entry points. I’m curious what others are seeing out there, though, especially with the market bouncing around like a chihuahua on espresso.
Personally, when I first got serious about diversifying my retirement beyond just real estate and stocks about eight years ago, the minimums for my Gold IRA felt pretty reasonable, especially with a 5M+ portfolio already going. I remember one outfit I looked at wanted $25k just to open an account, which felt a bit steep at the time for what I was initially allocating to precious metals. Eventually, I found a custodian that was more aligned with my allocation strategy, which was incremental adds every quarter instead of one big lump sum. Now, with the way things are going globally, I’m seriously considering upping my holdings – not just in my Gold IRA but also in my direct physical metals I keep secured up here in Aspen.
Are these minimums generally trending up or down these days? I’m thinking about setting up a separate IRA for my youngest and want to make sure I’m not missing anything. I’ve seen some sites talking about $5k or $10k, but then you get into the fees, and suddenly that “low minimum” isn’t looking so attractive. What are people’s actual experiences with setting up new accounts lately? Any hidden gotchas with these lower minimums?
