Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about silver and its potential, which got me thinking about my own allocation strategy. I've been in precious metals for over two decades now, ever since I retired from the auto plant here in Detroit. My portfolio is sitting comfortably between $500k and $1M, with a good chunk of that in physical gold. Always felt it was the ultimate safe haven, especially during those volatile periods we've seen. Gold just has a history and stability that silver, for all its industrial uses and potential, just doesn't quite match for me.

Currently, my allocation is probably around 85% gold to 15% silver. I have some peace and quiet with that. I remember back in '08 when things got really hairy, gold held its ground like a champion. Silver dipped more, recovered well, but the initial shock was more pronounced. I keep that in mind when debating whether to nudge more towards silver. For me, the primary purpose is capital preservation and a hedge against inflation. Gold has proven itself repeatedly on that front. I've been through a few cycles now, and my gut always tells me to stick with what works.

That being said, I'm not blind to silver's upside. With the push for green energy and all the tech coming out, its industrial demand is only going to grow. I'm just hesitant to push more of my hard-earned retirement savings into something that can be a bit more volatile. What are others out there doing with their gold-to-silver ratios? Especially those with a long-term outlook like mine. I’m always poking around the web for new perspectives, and I've found some really solid explanations and charts on the Learning Center. It helped me understand some of the historical performance differences pretty clearly.

Is anyone here significantly heavier on silver these days, and if so, what's your reasoning? I’m genuinely curious if I’m being too conservative or if my current allocation is still reasonably sound for someone enjoying their golden years.

I rolled over about $80k last year. Honestly the hardest part was just picking which metals to hold. Still second-guessing myself.

Hey, totally get where you're coming from on the gold vs. silver debate. My dad was actually in a super similar spot after he retired from the plant here in Michigan too! He's always been big on gold, but recently he's been kicking himself a bit for not scooping up more silver when it was cheaper. He definitely agrees with your point about diversifying within precious metals, even after all these years. Good stuff!

Awesome to hear from someone with so much experience in the game! Really appreciate you sharing your insights. Just curious, when you say "comfortable" with your current portfolio, what percentage of that is currently in gold vs. silver, roughly?

Interesting take, and definitely respect the experience. I'm curious though, with 20+ years, haven't you seen the silver-gold ratio fluctuate pretty wildly? While I agree gold is the more stable bedrock, completely writing off a higher silver allocation feels a bit like leaving potential gains on the table, especially given its industrial demand. Just a thought from someone who hasn't been in the game quite as long!

I keep going back and forth between gold and silver allocations. The gold-to-silver ratio right now is making silver look attractive.

The biggest mistake retirees make with their 401(k)
