Okay, so I've been looking into rolling over a portion of my old 401k into a Precious Metals IRA, specifically for gold. I'm a lawyer here in Philly, and while I have a decent chunk in the market, the current economic climate is making me a bit antsy. I've got a portfolio in the $750k range, and frankly, I'm more focused on wealth preservation at this stage of my career than aggressive growth. Diversification seems like a smart play, especially with inflation concerns.
I started the process about three weeks ago with a direct rollover from an old employer's 401k. The custodian on the 401k side initially told me it would be a "quick and seamless process," maybe 7-10 business days tops for them to release the funds. My new Gold IRA custodian then said once they receive the funds, the actual precious metals purchase and delivery to the depository would be another 2-3 days. Sounded reasonable on paper.
Well, here we are, going on four weeks, and the funds still haven't even left the old 401k plan! Every time I call, it's a different story: "waiting for a supervisor's approval," "holiday backlog," "just needs one more signature." It's incredibly frustrating. I'm trying to time this based on market conditions, and these delays are just eating into my planning. Has anyone else experienced these kinds of significant holdups with their 401k rollovers? Is this typical, or am I just dealing with a particularly slow provider?
Also, once everything does finally go through, I'm looking at the tax implications. I used the Tax Calculator on Gold IRA Blueprint to get an initial idea of what I'm looking at for my income bracket, but knowing how these things can sometimes have unforeseen twists, what are some of the less obvious tax considerations folks have encountered with their PM IRAs? Any advice on speeding up the initial transfer or tax pointers would be greatly appreciated!
