I wanted to share my recent experience with converting an inherited IRA into a Gold IRA, especially since I've been seeing a lot of chatter about this lately. My folks had a significant chunk of their retirement savings in a traditional IRA, mostly in mutual funds. After they passed, I inherited it, and to be honest, managing that much in stocks just wasn't sitting right with me, especially with the market looking a bit wobbly. I've always been a big believer in tangible assets – it's why I went heavy into real estate after I sold my tech company, and it made sense to me to apply that same principle here.
So, I started looking into a gold IRA rollover. My inherited IRA was around $1.5 million, and after some serious due diligence, I decided to move about $750k of it into physical gold and palladium within an IRA. The process itself wasn't as straightforward as I'd hoped, mostly due to the complexities of inherited IRA rules and making sure I was dealing with a reputable custodian. There were a few moments where I felt like pulling my hair out with all the paperwork and specific deadlines for distribution, but eventually, we got it done. The peace of mind I have now, knowing a significant portion of that inheritance is in something I can actually see and touch, is immense. Living here in Dublin, Ohio, there’s not exactly a massive gold market on the corner, so I had to make sure the storage was absolutely bulletproof.
What I'm wondering is, has anyone else here dealt with an inherited IRA and decided to go the precious metals route? Or even just a regular IRA conversion. What were the biggest hurdles you faced? Any unexpected fees or gotchas I should be aware of for future reference? I'm still feeling pretty good about the decision, but always open to hearing other perspectives and experiences.
Also, on the Palladium side, I diversified a smaller percentage into that. Any other investors here have significant Palladium holdings in their IRA? What's your outlook on it for the next 5-10 years? I did my research, of course, but it's always good to hear from folks in the trenches. It's a different beast than gold, for sure.
