Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over about $300k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been sitting on that 401k from my previous gig for a while, and with all the market volatility lately, I just wasn't feeling great about it. My financial advisor here in Lexington had been nudging me about diversifying beyond just stocks and bonds, especially with my bourbon industry exec salary already tied up pretty heavily in the broader market.
The whole process was surprisingly smooth. Took about three weeks from start to finish, mostly just getting the paperwork sorted. The company I went with had a pretty solid reputation, and their reps were super helpful walkin' me through all the steps. Honestly, the biggest hurdle was just making the decision to move that much capital into something different. It feels good having a tangible asset backing part of my retirement now. There's something about holding physical gold, even if it's in a vault, that just feels more secure than a number on a screen.
I guess part of it is my appreciation for legacy businesses – a commodity that's been valuable for thousands of years feels like a safe bet in the long run. Plus, seeing some of the bigger players in the bourbon world start to eye alternative investments just reinforced my decision. My portfolio is still mostly equity-based, but this gold allocation feels like a crucial hedge against inflation and any further economic shenanigans.
Curious if anyone else here has done a similar rollover recently? What were your experiences, both good and bad? Any insights into long-term performance or things I should be watching out for? Always good to hear from folks who've been in the game longer.
