Alright, so I’m really trying to get a handle on the custodian fees for my Gold IRA. I’ve had my account for about three years now – started with around $120k and it's definitely grown since then, pushing past $180k now, which is great. I’m with a company that charges a flat annual fee, which felt straightforward enough when I initially set it all up. But as the value goes up, I'm starting to wonder if a percentage-based fee might actually be better for me in the long run.
Currently, I’m paying $250 a year for storage and administration. On the surface, that sounds fine, but I’ve heard whispers of some companies charging less, or even having tiered systems that could be more beneficial for someone with my portfolio size. I own a horse farm outside Louisville, and while I love tangible assets, I'm also practical about every dollar spent. Every bit saved on fees is another bale of hay or vet visit, you know?
Has anyone here compared flat fees vs. percentage-based fees as their portfolio grows? Did you find a sweet spot where one clearly outperformed the other? I’m particularly interested in hearing from folks who might have similar portfolio sizes (say, $100k-$250k). I’m not looking to jump ship unless there’s a compelling reason, but I also don’t want to be leaving money on the table unnecessarily.
What are your custodians charging you, and how do you feel about their fee structure? Are there any hidden fees I should be looking out for if I start delving into other options? The transparency of my current setup is a big plus, and I'd hate to trade that for something that looks cheap but nickel-and-dimes you to death.
