5 years into my Gold IRA and feeling pretty good about it

Just hitting the 5-year mark on my Gold IRA and wanted to share some thoughts and see if anyone else has a similar experience. I opened mine back in late 2018, right before things started getting really squirrelly with the Fed and inflation whispers turned into screams. I’d been watching gold for a while, mostly as a hedge against the market volatility I deal with daily in my fund, and decided to pull the trigger for my personal retirement portfolio. Took about $750k out of some tech darlings that were looking a bit frothy at the time and moved it into physical gold and a bit of silver within the IRA structure. No regrets so far.
The entire process was smoother than I expected, honestly. My firm in Greenwich has solid connections, but I also independently vetted a few custodians that specialize in precious metals. Ended up going with one that offered segregated storage, which was a non-negotiable for me – didn't want my bars commingled with anyone else's. The actual rollover was just standard paperwork, and they handled all the logistics of purchasing and vaulting the metals. It felt good knowing that chunk of my retirement was physically diversified away from just stocks and bonds.
Looking at the performance, it's been a solid performer. My initial ~$750k is now comfortably over $1.15M, not including some smaller contributions I've made along the way. That's a good ~53% gain in five years, which is exactly what I was hoping for as a ballast against some of the more aggressive plays elsewhere in my portfolio. It's truly been that uncorrelated asset I wanted, delivering steady gains when other sectors were getting hammered. The peace of mind alone, especially since 2020, has been worth it.
Anyone else hit a significant milestone with their Gold IRA? What were your initial expectations versus the reality? And for those thinking about it, what are your biggest reservations? Curious to hear others’ takes on their precious metals holdings.
