Finally seeing the light with my gold holdings after a rocky start

Man, I gotta say, after years of holding gold in my IRA, I'm finally feeling pretty good about it. I remember back in the day, probably around 2018 or so, when I first started diversifying beyond just stocks and bonds. As a doctor here in Boston, you see a lot of colleagues chasing the latest hot tech stock, but I always preferred a more balanced approach, especially with a good chunk of my portfolio being in that $500k-$1M range. I dipped my toes into physical gold for a good 5-7% of my IRA, and honestly, for a while, it felt like it was just sitting there, not doing much. Had a couple of buddies give me the side-eye for it, too.
Then 2020 hit, and things started to look a bit different. While the market was doing its rollercoaster thing, my gold holdings actually provided a decent cushion. It wasn't a get-rich-quick scheme by any stretch, but it definitely eased some of the anxiety seeing other parts of my portfolio fluctuate wildly. Fast forward to today, with all the global uncertainty, inflation worries, and talks of economic slowdowns, and my gold has just been steadily chugging along. It’s comforting to know that a portion of my retirement is relatively insulated from some of these more volatile market forces.
It's not about huge gains with gold for me, it's about preserving wealth and having that bedrock in my portfolio. I actually spent a lot of time educating myself initially – devoured countless articles and even found some useful stuff on the Learning Center at Gold IRA Blueprint, which was a pretty comprehensive resource for understanding the ins and outs.
Anyone else in a similar boat, feeling that long-term gold play is finally paying off? Or are there still some skeptics out there? Curious to hear others’ experiences, especially those who’ve been holding for a while.
