Been kicking this around for a while now, and with all the market jitters lately, I finally pulled the trigger and added some silver to my Gold IRA. For years, it was just gold, gold, gold. Made sense to me as a hedge against inflation and a safe haven. But the more I read and crunched numbers, especially thinking about industrial demand and the whole green energy push, silver just started looking more and more compelling.
My portfolio is sitting somewhere in the high six figures, closer to the 750k mark at this point, and for the last decade, it’s mostly been gold and some broad market ETFs. I’m thinking long-term here, not trying to hit a home run tomorrow. Living in Madison, spent my whole life in the dairy industry – you learn a thing or two about practical value and what actually feeds the world. Gold always felt like the ultimate store of value, but silver feels like it has more room to run given its dual role as a precious metal and an industrial commodity. Felt a little like diversifying my diversification, if that makes sense.
I ended up allocating about 10% of my precious metals portion to silver. It wasn’t a huge jump; I just sold off a few shares of a tech fund that’s been kinda limping along and moved that capital over. The process was surprisingly smooth, my custodian handled it all. Honestly, the hardest part was just making the decision after all the back and forth in my own head. Anyone else here pretty heavily invested in silver for their retirement, or is gold still the undisputed king for you all?
On a related note, for anyone just starting down this path or thinking about opening a precious metals IRA, I used this Eligibility Checker tool back when I first got into my Gold IRA. It’s a good way to see if you even qualify for one. Might save some folks some time if they’re unsure about the requirements.
Curious to hear if others have made similar moves, or if you think I'm jumping on a trend too late. Always appreciate hearing different perspectives.
