Just wanted to share my experience finally getting some gold into my retirement portfolio. Been eyeing it for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and the general volatility in the stock market lately. I've got a decent chunk saved, probably around $350k in my old 401k from my previous company, and while it's done okay, I just couldn't shake the feeling that I was too exposed to paper assets.
Being in manufacturing here in Cleveland, I've always had a preference for tangible assets, things you can hold and actually see. Stocks and bonds are fine, but gold just feels… substantial. The process of getting it rolled over from my old 401k into a self-directed Gold IRA wasn't as complicated as I thought it would be. Found a reputable custodian, handled the paperwork, and now I’ve got about 15% of my retirement allocated to physical gold stored in a vault. It’s a good feeling knowing a piece of my nest egg isn't just numbers on a screen.
I know some people think it's an outdated investment, but honestly, with all the geopolitical uncertainty and the national debt skyrocketing, it feels like a really smart move for long-term wealth preservation. I'm not looking to get rich quick with gold, but rather to protect what I've already earned. It definitely helps me sleep better at night knowing a portion of my retirement isn't entirely at the mercy of market whims or the next crazy economic policy.
Anyone else here feel a similar pull towards hard assets for their retirement? What percentage of your portfolio do you have in gold or other precious metals? Always interested to hear other perspectives on this, especially from those who've been doing it longer than I have.
