I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately on here about "paper gold" options, and it's really making me appreciate my Gold IRA even more. As someone who's been around the oil industry for a while here in Tulsa, and picked up a bit of financial savvy from watching the execs, I went pretty hard into physical gold for my IRA a few years back. Honestly, it was a bit of a learning curve, but seeing how volatile things can get – especially with global events – I just feel a lot more secure knowing I have actual, tangible metal.
My portfolio is sitting comfortably between $150k-$200k now, and a significant chunk of that is in physical gold coins and bars held in a depository for my IRA. The whole idea of owning a share of an ETF that tracks gold prices, or some unallocated account, just feels... abstract. What if something really goes sideways? Is that piece of paper really going to be worth what it says it is? Maybe I'm just old school, but the thought of having direct ownership keeps me sleeping better at night, especially with all the economic uncertainty swirling around.
I mean, sure, the premiums for physical can sometimes be a little higher, and there are storage fees, but to me, that's almost like an insurance policy. I've spent enough time watching markets to know that liquidity can dry up fast when things get rough. With physical, you have that underlying asset. I've heard some people argue for the ease of trading paper gold, or the lower fees, but I'm not looking to day-trade my retirement. This is long-term stability for me.
So, for those of you who have a Gold IRA, what made you choose physical gold over paper options, or vice-versa? Did any of you start with paper and then switch, or vice versa? I'm genuinely curious about other people's thought processes here. What's been your experience?
