Okay, so I've been sitting on a pretty solid Gold IRA for years now, probably somewhere in the $700k range. Mostly gold, as you'd expect. But lately, I've been feeling a little... exposed, if that makes sense. Being out here in Honolulu, you tend to get a different perspective on global supply chains and geopolitical shifts. You see the freighters coming and going, or sometimes, not going, and you start connecting the dots differently than someone smack dab in the middle of the continental US.

My big thought process lately has been around industrial demand. Everyone talks about gold as a hedge against inflation and currency debasement, which it absolutely is. That's why I started my IRA in the first place, especially after seeing hyperinflation discussions crop up more and more in places like the Philippines or even whispers in some South American economies. But silver? Silver has that industrial component that gold just doesn't have to the same degree. EVs, solar panels, electronics – it's everywhere. And with the push for green tech accelerating globally, especially with China's dominance in a lot of those manufacturing sectors and the US ramping up its own efforts, it just felt like a no-brainer.

So, about six months ago, I started gradually adding silver to my IRA. Nothing huge, maybe about 10% of my total metals holdings so far, but I’m looking at bumping that up to 15-20% over the next year if the price action stays reasonable. I used a portion of some gains from other investments to do it, so I wasn't just raiding my existing gold. It feels like a smart diversification play, broadening my hedge beyond just monetary uncertainty to include tangible industrial demand. Who knows what these supply chains will look like in another 5-10 years, right?

Has anyone else here made a similar move recently? What were your triggers for adding silver to a predominantly gold-heavy precious metals portfolio? I'm curious if others are seeing the same industrial demand signals I am, especially those of you who might have a good pulse on manufacturing or tech trends.

Interesting take. I get the desire for diversification, especially with the current global climate, but dumping a significant chunk of a largely gold-based portfolio into silver feels more like a lateral move than true diversification to me. Both are precious metals and tend to follow similar market trends, even if silver has more industrial uses. You might just be doubling down on a particular asset class's vulnerabilities, albeit with a different metal. Have you looked into other non-precious metal tangible assets for that diversification?

Totally get this! I had a similar feeling a few years back, though on a much smaller scale than your $700k (jeez, congrats!). My IRA was almost exclusively gold and I kept reading about silver's industrial uses and the supply/demand dynamics. It just clicked for me that it was a smart hedge, especially with how volatile everything felt globally. Haven't regretted adding silver to the mix one bit.

This is interesting. You mentioned being "exposed" before diversifying. Was that feeling more about general market volatility, or something specific to holding only gold versus a mix?
