Hey everyone, just read this article about Giyani Metals’ K. Hill project in Botswana (link here). The headline really grabbed me – "leaner, pricier manganese project." My initial reaction, after digging into previous reports on Giyani, is a bit of a head scratcher. A post-tax NPV of $481.5 million is still decent, especially in this market, but it's half of what was estimated in the 2023 PEA. That's a significant downgrade in value. I've been eyeing the manganese space for a while, thinking about how it fits into the EV battery supply chain, and while Giyani has always seemed promising, this kind of revision makes me pause. My portfolio is already a bit heavy on junior miners, and I'm trying to be extra disciplined about new additions, especially for those long-term retirement goals.
The "pricier" part, meaning higher capital costs, is also a concern. In today's inflationary environment, project costs can spiral fast, and that eats into future returns. I appreciate the transparency of a feasibility study, but a 50% drop in NPV from a PEA to a FS is definitely something to scrutinize. Are they being overly conservative now, or were the previous estimates just too optimistic? I know the value of manganese for high-purity applications, and the location in Botswana is relatively stable, but this delta between studies is hard to ignore. For a company like Giyani, which is still pre-production, these numbers are everything.
What are your thoughts on this? Is this a case of a more realistic assessment, or does this signal underlying issues? Anyone here invested in Giyani, or followed them closely? Curious to hear from others who have more experience with these kinds of project re-ratings. My wife even asked me about this one the other day, and now I'm not so sure what to tell her!
