Hey everyone, just caught this article about Elliot Management taking a A$1B stake in Northern Star. You can read it here: https://www.mining.com/activist-shareholder-elliot-built-a1b-stake-in-northern-star/
My first thought was, wow, A$1B! Elliot doesn't mess around, and if they're getting involved, it usually means they see significant untapped value or some serious operational changes needed. As someone who's dabbed in a bit of gold exposure for my portfolio (mostly through ETFs and some smaller miners to hedge against inflation for my retirement fund), seeing a major activist player like this jump into a company like Northern Star is definitely eyebrow-raising. They're now among the top 5 shareholders, right up there with Van Eck and BlackRock, which is huge.
I'm really interested to see what Elliot's play is here. Are they going to push for a spin-off? Increased dividends? A complete management overhaul? My guess is they're probably eyeing some of those high-grade projects and thinking the market isn't fully appreciating their potential, or perhaps they see inefficiencies that can be squeezed out. I've always respected how Elliot tends to shake things up and unlock value, though it can sometimes be a bumpy ride for existing shareholders in the short term. What are your thoughts on this? Does anyone here hold Northern Star, and how do you feel about this development?
