Hey everyone, I'm trying to wrap my head around custodian fees for my Platinum IRA and looking for some real-world experiences. I'm based in Richmond, VA, and I've been doing a pretty deep dive into the different options out there. My portfolio is sitting comfortably between $350k-$400k right now, and I'm a stickler for optimizing every aspect, especially recurring costs.
I've been looking at a few of the big players, along with some smaller, specialized firms. It seems like there's a pretty wide range when it comes to annual fees, storage fees (segregated vs. unsegregated), and transaction costs. For a university professor like me, who's used to dissecting research papers, the variations can be a bit overwhelming. Some custodians are pitching a flat annual fee, while others have a tiered system based on the account value. How many of you have actually negotiated these fees down successfully? And what was your approach?
Specifically, I'm wondering if anyone has gone with a smaller, more niche custodian and found their fees to be significantly better than the larger, more well-known ones, without sacrificing security or customer service. I'm weighing whether the perceived "peace of mind" with a huge institution is worth a potentially higher annual fee. I'm also curious about hidden fees – anything you guys have encountered that wasn't immediately obvious?
My goal is to minimize the drag on returns over the long term, especially with precious metals, where capital appreciation can sometimes be a slower burn. What's been your experience with annual statement fees, wire transfer fees, or even fees for account termination? Any insights or recommendations (or warnings!) would be massively appreciated. Just trying to make the most informed decision possible for my retirement.
