Custodian Fees - Are These Normal? Feeling a bit fleeced in RI

Okay, so I've been in on the Gold IRA train for a few years now, got about $85k invested across a mix of physical gold and silver allocated with one of the bigger players. Runs my jewelry store here in Providence, so I’m no stranger to metal prices, but this custodian fee thing always leaves me a little… confused. Are these fees really standard? I'm paying around $250 a year right now, which feels like a decent chunk of change for essentially holding my assets in a vault. I mean, I get the security, insurance, all that, but it still stings a bit.

I'm trying to figure out if I might be able to find a better deal. I've heard some custodians charge a flat fee, others a percentage. Mine's a flat fee, which is nice when the portfolio grows, but when it’s stagnant, it just feels like pure overhead. Has anyone here had success negotiating these fees, or is it pretty much take it or leave it? I'm wondering if I should even bother looking into transferring to a different custodian, or if the hassle and potential transfer fees just negate any savings. My RMDs are still a ways off, but I’m already thinking about what that’s going to look like and trying to minimize any extra costs. I've even been messing around with that RMD Calculator I found online to get a rough idea, and every dollar saved on fees means more in my pocket during retirement.

What are you guys paying for custodian fees on your Gold IRAs? Specifically for allocated storage, if you've got that setup. Is there a "sweet spot" or a general range that's considered fair? I’m happy with my metal holdings, but this one aspect of the investment always feels a bit opaque.

Any insights from those who've compared or even switched custodians would be hugely appreciated. Is it worth the effort to shop around, or am I just grasping at straws to save a few bucks that aren't really there?

Hey, I hear you on the custodian fee frustration, it's definitely something you want to keep an eye on. You mentioned "physical gold and silver allocated" - does your custodian charge differently for segregated vs. commingled storage, or is it a flat fee regardless of how it's stored? Just curious if that's a factor in your overall costs.

Yeah, I feel you on the fees. I had a similar setup a few years back with about $70k, and the custodian fees felt like they were eating into my returns more than they should. Ended up shopping around a bit and found a different custodian with a tiered fee structure that worked out better for me. Definitely worth looking into other options if you're feeling fleeced.

Hey, I hear you on the fees. It definitely stings to see those annual charges, especially when you're already keyed into the metal market. But honestly, for $85k, those fees might actually be pretty standard for a fully allocated, insured physical gold and silver setup. I'm seeing a lot of places charge similar for that level of service, especially with the compliance and storage involved. It's not like they're just holding a digital certificate, right? Could be worse, believe it or not.

Hey, I hear you on the custodian fees! It's definitely something to keep an eye on. One thing I found super helpful when comparing was looking closely at whether they charge a flat fee or a percentage. Sometimes the percentage looks lower but can really add up as your investment grows, whereas a flat fee might be more predictable.

You might want to check out some of the comparison sites that break down custodian fees for different providers. Investopedia usually has a good breakdown that can help you see if what you're paying is in the ballpark or if there's room to negotiate/switch. Good luck!

Totally feel this. I'm in MA with a similar setup ($90k, gold & silver) and my custodian fees are right there with yours, maybe even a tiny bit higher. Always feels like a kick in the teeth, especially when the market’s flat. You’d think with that much metal they’d cut us some slack.
