I've been a pretty consistent gold investor for a few years now, and I’m always trying to make sure I’m not leaving money on the table when it comes to fees. Based in Tampa, and working as a healthcare admin, my portfolio is currently sitting around the $180k mark, with a good chunk in my Gold IRA. I’ve been with my current custodian for about four years, and while I haven’t had any major complaints, I'm just wondering if I could be getting a better deal elsewhere.
My current setup has annual custodian fees, transaction fees on buys, and then a percentage for storage. It’s not exorbitant, but when you add it all up, it definitely eats into the gains. I’m especially curious about how others handle the storage fees – is there a sweet spot for portfolio size where some companies become significantly more competitive? Are flat fees better than percentage-based as your portfolio grows? I’m mostly holding physical gold and some silver, so the storage aspect is a big consideration.
I know some companies advertise "low fees" but then hit you with a bunch of hidden charges, which is what I'm trying to avoid. I've heard some people talk about Noble Gold and Augusta Precious Metals, but I haven't done a deep dive into their fee structures yet. Has anyone made a switch recently and found a company with genuinely lower or more transparent fees? Or conversely, has anyone stuck with a company and felt their fees were totally justifiable for the service?
Any insights from you seasoned gold IRA folks would be super helpful. Just looking for some real-world comparisons to see if it’s worth the hassle of potentially moving things around. What kind of fees are you guys seeing, and what’s your overall satisfaction with your custodian's fee structure?
