Gold IRA newbie here - what did you mess up so I don't have to?

Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger and rolled over about $75k of my old 401k into a Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals last month. Been thinking about it for ages, especially with all the craziness in the stock market and honestly, my royalties from last year didn't exactly blow anyone's mind. Figured it was time to put some of my money into something more tangible. I'm a sound engineer down here in Nashville, and while I love my job, the idea of having a chunk of my retirement in something other than speculative tech stocks just feels… solid. Like a well-mixed track, you know?
The whole process was actually smoother than I expected, which almost makes me wonder if I missed something obvious. I spent weeks doing research, reading up on different companies, and trying to understand all the rules and regulations. I’ve seen enough rookies in the studio mess up major takes because they skipped the prep work, and I didn't want to do that with my money. But I know there have to be common pitfalls for first-timers.
So, for those of you who've been in the gold game longer than my last mastering session, what are the big "D'OH!" moments you had? What mistakes did you make early on that you wish someone had warned you about? I'm talking anything from choosing the wrong custodian to not understanding fees, to even just the emotional side of watching a different kind of market. I'm keen to learn from your experiences before I accidentally hit a flat note with my retirement.
Any advice, war stories, or even just general wisdom would be hugely appreciated. I want to make sure I'm setting myself up for success with this, especially since I'm planning to put a bit more into it next year once I cash in some old gear I'm not using anymore. What should I absolutely be watching out for?
