Alright, so I pulled the trigger on rolling over a portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals about six months ago. Before that, I was pretty much 100% in tech stocks, which worked out great for a while, but living in SF, you see firsthand how quickly things can shift. I wanted some real tangible assets, something outside the digital ether, especially with all the market turbulence last year. I ended up moving roughly $350k into physical gold and silver through them.
The whole process was surprisingly smooth. I was expecting a lot more friction, honestly. From the initial consultation, getting my questions answered about fees, storage, and the types of metals available, to finally getting the physical assets into the Delaware Depository vault, it took about three weeks end-to-end. Their team was super patient, especially since I had a lot of nitty-gritty questions about spreads and buyback policies. It felt less like a hard sell and more like an educational process, which I appreciated given my background.
Now that it's been half a year, I'm definitely feeling a bit more at ease with that segment of my portfolio. It's not a get-rich-quick play, that's for sure – I'm looking at this as a long-term hedge against inflation and market volatility, especially after seeing what interest rates have done. I actually spent quite a bit of time on that "Gold vs Stocks Comparison" tool on goldirablueprint.com before making my decision, comparing the 10-year performance. It really helped put things into perspective about diversification, even if gold doesn't always outperform.
My question for those of you who have been in this game longer: what are your thoughts on rebalancing? I'm comfortable with my current allocation, but how often do you typically revisit your precious metal holdings relative to the rest of your portfolio? Any specific triggers you look for?
