American Eagles vs Buffalos - what are folks buying?
- •I've been pretty consistent with Eagles since setting up my Gold IRA a few years back, just felt like the standard.
- •Got about $400k in the IRA now, mostly Eagles with a smattering of other stuff I picked up when prices dipped.
- •Figured he knew his stuff, been with him since my dairy days.
Been seeing a lot of back and forth lately about American Gold Eagles versus American Gold Buffalos, and honestly, it's making me wonder if I'm missing something. I've been pretty consistent with Eagles since setting up my Gold IRA a few years back, just felt like the standard. Got about $400k in the IRA now, mostly Eagles with a smattering of other stuff I picked up when prices dipped. My financial advisor back in Madison always just steered me towards Eagles, said they were the most recognized and easiest to liquidate if I ever needed to. Figured he knew his stuff, been with him since my dairy days.
My thinking was always simple: a 1 oz gold coin is a 1 oz gold coin, right? But now I'm seeing more posts here arguing for Buffalos because of the 24k purity. Eagles are 22k, I know, with that copper and silver alloy making them more durable. For a long-term hold in an IRA, does that 24k really make a significant difference in value or liquidity down the line? Or is it just a preference thing for collectors?
I'm not exactly looking to trade these things every other week, they're part of my retirement plan, bought them for stability against inflation and all the other craziness. But if there's a tangible benefit to going with Buffalos for future contributions, I'm all ears. What are the practical considerations beyond just the purity number? Anyone regretted going heavy one way or the other? Just curious what the consensus is among folks here who are doing similar long-term holds.
