5 Years In – My Gold IRA Journey & Thoughts on Returns (MN Investor Here)

Okay, so it’s officially been 5 years since I opened my Gold IRA, and I figured it was time to share my experience and hear from others who’ve been in the game a bit longer or are just starting out. I’m a marketing exec based in Minneapolis, shooting for an early retirement (mid-50s if everything goes according to plan!), and I decided to diversify my portfolio with precious metals back in 2018 when things felt a little… shaky. Best decision I made for my peace of mind, honestly.
I started with around $100k, mostly moving funds from an old 401k, and I’ve incrementally added to it over the years, putting in another $25k or so when I had some extra cash from bonuses. My portfolio is sitting comfortably between $170k-$180k now, depending on the day, which feels pretty good. It’s mostly American Gold Eagles and some Gold Buffalos, with a small percentage (maybe 10-15%) in silver. I'm not going to lie, seeing those numbers fluctuate can still give me a nervous twitch sometimes, especially when there's economic uncertainty, but it's held its own remarkably well compared to some of my more volatile stock holdings during tougher periods.
My main goal wasn't aggressive growth; it was wealth preservation and acting as a hedge against inflation and market downturns. And in that regard, it’s absolutely delivered. I’m not touting eye-popping, “get rich quick” returns like you sometimes see boasted about on other subs, but the steady, reliable appreciation has been incredibly reassuring. It’s allowed me to sleep better at night knowing a portion of my retirement isn't directly tied to the whims of the stock market. Plus, the thought of actually holding physical assets just appeals to me on a fundamental level.
For those of you with Gold IRAs, especially those with similar portfolio sizes or retirement goals, what have your experiences been like? Have you tinkered with your allocation between gold and silver, or other metals? Are you happy with your custodians and storage? I'm always curious to hear what other investors are doing and if there are any blind spots I might be missing as I look ahead to that early retirement!
