5 years in Gold IRA - honestly, pretty solid so far

Just hit the five-year mark with my Gold IRA, and you know what? Pretty impressed with how it's performed. When I initially diversified into it back in 2018, I was sitting on about a $5.2M portfolio, mostly in real estate projects and some pretty high-risk tech ventures. Geared about 15% of that towards precious metals, mostly gold, but a little silver too. It was less about chasing insane returns and more about having a bedrock when other things inevitably went sideways. Living up here in Aspen, I see a lot of folks get caught up in the latest crypto craze, but I've always been a believer in tangibles. My dad always said, "Son, you can't print more gold."
My initial investment was around $780k, and I went with a pretty standard mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs. Nothing exotic, just solid, recognizable bullion. My primary custodian has been pretty straightforward, no major headaches. Fees are what they are, expected with any specialized account. I've been checking in on it quarterly, more out of curiosity than anything, but the growth has been consistent, especially with all the market volatility we've seen. We just closed on a new development in Snowmass, and watching the gold price tick up while other assets felt a bit squishier has been a real comfort. I haven't done a full re-evaluation yet, but a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation puts my gold holdings comfortably past the million-dollar mark.
I know some people on these subs write off precious metals as a "boomer" investment, or that the returns aren't as sexy as some tech stocks. And sure, it's not going to double overnight. But for someone whose primary wealth is tied up in illiquid assets like real estate, having a chunk of something that holds its value and is easily transferable globally? That's sexy enough for me. It’s part of a broader strategy, not my only play by any stretch. But it allows me to sleep better at night, knowing there's a significant portion of my wealth that isn't beholden to interest rate hikes or speculative bubbles.
Anyone else hit the five-year mark recently? What are your thoughts on your allocation and has your perspective changed at all? Are there any less common gold products or strategies you've found particularly appealing for long-term holds that I should be looking into?
