My wife came home from her book club or whatever it was last week absolutely convinced we need to dump a chunk of our portfolio into a Platinum IRA. She heard some story from a friend of a friend about how their uncle made a killing, yadda yadda. Now, I'm all about diversification, especially with the state of, well, everything these days. Our family's always had a good amount in timberland, and I've got my own investments, but precious metals haven't really been a huge focus beyond some physical gold we literally keep locked up.
I'm sitting on a portfolio roughly in the $350k range right now, mostly a mix of stocks and some decent real estate here in Spokane. I've been thinking about getting more into metals, especially with inflation showing its ugly head, but Platinum? Gold, sure, but Platinum feels like a slightly different beast. She's got me thinking, especially since she's usually pretty level-headed about this stuff, but I want to make sure I'm not just getting swept up in a single anecdote.
So, for those of you who've actually gone the Platinum IRA route, what's been your experience? Has anyone had a significant win (or even a loss to learn from) that pushed them one way or another? I'm talking actual numbers, if you're comfortable sharing. I'm looking at this as a long-term play, thinking about what my kids will inherit someday, not trying to get rich quick. Is it a good generational wealth move, or just another fad? Appreciate any real-world insights.
