Took me long enough, right? My wife (bless her persistent heart) has been nudging me about putting some of our portfolio into precious metals for years. I’m a lawyer, so I tend to be pretty methodical and, frankly, a bit risk-averse, especially with our retirement nest egg. We're sitting on somewhere between $500k and $1M in our various accounts, and while I’ve always been good at conventional investments, the thought of moving a chunk into something I didn't fully grasp felt… different. I live in Philly and the market volatility lately has really had me thinking more about wealth preservation, and less about chasing aggressive growth. She finally broke through to me with some really compelling arguments.
Her main point, and what ultimately swayed me, was the idea of true diversification and a hedge against inflation. We’re both in our late 50s, and honestly, the thought of our savings getting eaten away by rising costs while traditional investments flounder is a genuine fear. She pulled up so many articles and talked about how gold has historically performed during economic downturns, and how it’s a tangible asset outside of the financial system. It just clicked – it’s not about getting rich quick, but about protecting what we’ve worked so hard for. We’re not talking about putting all our eggs in one basket, but moving a meaningful percentage to safeguard our future.
I’m still in the research phase for custodians and dealers, but I'm feeling a lot better about this decision. It feels like a smart, proactive step rather than just reacting to market swings. Has anyone else had a similar experience with a spouse or partner convincing them to go this route? What were your biggest initial concerns, and how did you overcome them once you pulled the trigger? Did you start small and then scale up, or go for a larger initial investment?
One thing I'm already looking into is how this will affect our RMDs down the line when I hit 73. I found this RMD Calculator tool at goldirablueprint.com which looks really useful for figuring out those future distributions. Any other hidden considerations or pro-tips I should be aware of as I move forward with establishing this Gold IRA?
