Been seeing a lot of chatter about gold recently, which is great, but wanted to throw out my own experience with adding silver into my precious metals IRA. For years, pretty much since I started seriously investing back in my late 20s, I’ve been almost exclusively in physical gold within my self-directed IRA. The whole manufacturing executive in Cleveland thing, you just tend to appreciate hard assets, you know? It's tangible, holds its value, and frankly, it just feels more secure than a lot of the digital paper out there.
My account was sitting comfortably, a little north of $350k all in gold coins and bars, mostly American Eagles and some Canadian Maples. But over the last year or so, I started feeling a little…naked? Just entirely in gold. With all the economic uncertainty, inflation worries, and frankly, just seeing how much industrial demand seems to be picking up for silver, I started doing some deeper dives. After some research and talking to my IRA custodian, I decided to allocate about 15% of my holdings into silver. This meant pulling about $50k-$60k out of gold and re-allocating it.
My reasoning was pretty straightforward: higher industrial utility, lower price point (meaning more ounces for your dollar), and historically, it tends to track gold but with more volatility, which I actually see as an upside for bigger gains during certain economic phases. Plus, the gold-to-silver ratio felt a bit stretched, suggesting silver was relatively undervalued. It felt like a smart diversification play, not just for "stacking" but for a genuinely different risk profile within the precious metals umbrella. I still love my gold, don't get me wrong, it's the bedrock, but silver just felt like a necessary addition.
Anyone else here made a similar move recently? Or for those heavily in silver, what were your core motivators? I’m always curious to hear other perspectives, especially from folks who’ve been in this game longer than my decade or so.
