I've been kicking around the idea of a Gold IRA for a while now, probably close to 6 months of intermittent research. My portfolio is sitting around the $180k mark, mostly in traditional stocks and a handful of REITs. Living in Vegas, pretty much everyone I know works in the casino industry, myself included for the last 20+ years. I've seen enough economic ups and downs to know that diversification isn't just a buzzword, it's essential. The last few years, especially with all the market volatility, have really solidified my interest in getting some of my assets into physical gold.
My biggest hang-up right now is picking the right custodian and understanding all the fees involved. It feels like every company out there is shouting about being "the best" or "fee-free," and it's hard to cut through the noise. I appreciate a good gamble, but not when it comes to my retirement savings. So, for those of you who've already gone through this process, what were your biggest lessons learned? Any specific custodians you'd recommend or outright avoid? I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who started with a similar portfolio size.
I've also been trying to figure out if I even qualify for a Gold IRA. I found this online "Eligibility Checker" at https://eligibility.goldirablueprint.com/ the other day, and it seems pretty straightforward for a quick check. Has anyone used that specific tool, or something similar? It's nice to get a sense of things without having to talk to a salesperson immediately. I'm looking to roll over a portion of my existing IRA, so knowing I meet the basic criteria upfront would save a lot of time. Any insights on the rollover process itself would also be super helpful.
Appreciate any wisdom you all can share. Always good to hear from folks who've actually been there and done that rather than just reading articles.
