Okay, so I'm trying to get a handle on the actual timeline for rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve been talking to my financial advisor here in Salt Lake, and he’s been super helpful, but I’m curious what real people experienced. He said it can vary a lot, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, depending on the previous custodian and all that jazz.
I'm looking to transfer about $300k, maybe a bit more, from an old employer's 401k. It's been sitting there for a few years now, and with everything going on, I just feel so much better having some physical precious metals in my retirement portfolio. My advisor specifically mentioned platinum as a solid option alongside gold and silver, given its industrial demand and relatively constrained supply – something I hadn't really considered until he brought it up. I’m thinking of putting a decent chunk into gold, and then a smaller allocation to platinum just to diversify that precious metals exposure.
My biggest concern right now is how long the process actually takes from start to finish. I'm trying to time a few things on my end, and a clearer picture of the transfer duration would really help with planning. Did anyone here go through a similar transfer recently? What was your experience with the old 401k provider in terms of getting them to release the funds? Were there any unexpected hang-ups, or was it pretty smooth sailing? Any insights on dealing with specific custodians would be amazing!
