Took me a good year, maybe even a little longer, to finally get my wife to warm up to the idea of a Gold IRA. She's always been pretty conservative with our investments, which I appreciate, but sometimes that means she's a bit slow to adopt anything outside of the traditional stock market and our 401k. I've been reading up on precious metals for a while now, especially with all the talk about inflation and economic uncertainty. As an insurance agent here in Omaha, I see firsthand how many people are worried about their retirement savings.
I must have shown her a dozen articles, maybe more, about the benefits of diversifying with physical assets. Gold's track record as a hedge against inflation and market volatility was the main selling point for me. Our portfolio is sitting around $200k right now, and while we've got a good chunk in our regular retirement accounts, I felt like we were just too exposed to market swings. I wanted to put about 10-15% of that into gold, just for that extra layer of security. She was really worried about liquidity initially, and kept asking about Storage fees, which are valid concerns, of course.
What finally sealed the deal wasn't really an article or a statistic. It was actually a conversation she had with her uncle, who's been investing in physical gold for decades. He just talked to her about peace of mind, and how he sleeps better knowing a portion of his wealth isn't tied directly to the whims of the stock market. She came home that night and just said, "Okay, let's look into it seriously now." I was so relieved! We've started the process of rolling over a portion of an older IRA into a Gold IRA. We're still in the early stages, but it feels good to finally have that diversification in place.
Anyone else here have a similar experience convincing a skeptical spouse? What finally got them over the hump? And for those who've done the rollover, anything I should be particularly mindful of during the process?
